I found a Duracell 8D for about $200 here: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/duracell-c ... tid=262545
Would 2 of those work?
Thanks!

Re: Wind turbine to run ALL my servers and workstation??
I am with Karl.
Convert most of that equipment to 12 or 24VDC
I bet except for the PC, they ALL have a power supply that converts the 120VAC to a DC voltage.

I use two of these 12V in series for 24V. $530 ea. They are in a metal "can". 110kg 12.7"x9.8"x17.3"/ea. My system has an automatic waterer. That $17.66/month over 60 months. I have room for two more batteries and will add them this year.
If I squeeze a little 8 batteries will fit. (in my power house) My panels would handle two more batteries. The Outback Charge controller will handle 8 batteries easily.
Solar panels you pay for once. Unknown how long they last though they may degrade to 80+% in 10 years or so.
Also check out L16. My batteries = 4 ea L16. (6V)
I buy my batteries and panels from this outfit. Very competitive.

Re: Wind turbine to run ALL my servers and workstation??
Remember the batteries need to be outside...or in a separate room vented to outside away from children and fine electronics. The fumes turn copper a funny color.
So wind on the roof would run 3 phase? to the battery location. There it converts to 12V or 24. You want the shortest run possible for battery cables. 2/0 gauge copper for interconnects. Then a pair at least of no more than 10' Inverter battery cables. 2/0 again. The last cable my guy put in here was $3.50 /ft.
You should all get a copy of Backwoods Solar Catalog. It's a wealth of information.

Re: Wind turbine to run ALL my servers and workstation??
I'll have to double check on the 3 phase AC coming from the wind generator. I thought it was producing straight 24V DC current.
Noted on the wires and cost too! Scary $ lol.

Re: Wind turbine to run ALL my servers and workstation??
I cruised through it pretty fast....I'll read again.
It HAS to be high voltage DC or AC of some sort. The batteries are hard to mount on the mast.
My wind charger is 24V so 10 gauge worked....bout a 35' run. Any farther and I would had to flip it to AC. There's folks here 200+ feet from their wind machines....water pumps too. It's relaxing when you use AC, line length is no longer an object. Save on wire and pay more for converters. It equals out.
Buy from a pro would be my advise.
The guy from Advance Solar was leaving for lunch when I first met him. I went with and bought his lunch. (steak) I started small but I used good stuff.

Re: Wind turbine to run ALL my servers and workstation??
This gobbely-gook is what I remembered.WIND TURBINE, COMES IN 12 VOLT 3 PHASE AC TO DC OUTPUT MODEL
(Can be used as 3 phase output or Dc output for battery charging)
3 phase output is the most efficient, no voltage and amperage loss in long runs
like DC suffers from. DC output requires heavy expensive cable
and has a high power loss over long runs. Straight DC
output is now just simply old technology. If you are replacing a dc output model you can
just mount the included bridge rectifier at the top of the tower
for the same run of wire as your DC model if you wish. The bridge rectifier converts the long run of efficient
3 phase into dc next your charge controller, batteries, or grid tie inverter. The 3 phase output can
be used direct to some equipment like 3 phase grid tie inverters as well. Either way you use
it, this is a very versatile output wind turbine.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.

Re: Wind turbine to run ALL my servers and workstation??
Jeff,
From what I've read the sealed 8D batteries do NOT need to be vented.
Thanks!
