OS suggestions?
OS suggestions?
I have W7 32 bit PRO on this CF-74K With 4gb ram, 500gb HDD (wish was SSD). Took forever to get it up to date since I started with an old ISO.
That being a given due to work programs. My other OS's of choice are Mint cinn flavor, LXLE, and PCL . I've run them all on an earlier 74 without touch screen. TS is actually just a happy coincidence in this situation, since it doesn't perform like more modern TS's do. So it's just there.
What other OS's do the old timers here recommend? I use the W side for work programs and Linux for everything and anything else. The extent of my hardcore gaming is Mine Craft so not worried about the lack of heavy graphics ability.
Also wondering if a 64 bit Linux will perform decently on this machine? It pretty much will serve as one of my rough duty toys.

Re: OS suggestions?
Exact model number is going to be the first start point.
I don't have any experience with the 74 series but both Zorin and Mint have been good for the 30 series machines. Both use the Ubuntu repositories and seem to have good hardware support.

Re: OS suggestions?
I've been using 64 bit on several ( 4-6 ) machines for about a year. Mint 17, 17.1, or 17LMDE. I try a lot of distros but when I need it to work no issues I gravitate back to mint. (cinnamon is my favorite).
MX-14 is worth a look.

Re: OS suggestions?
I'm using mainly debian versions that have been simplified for general use.
If you are into stable debian versions, here are my two current favorites:
MX-14
http://www.mepiscommunity.org/
LMDE
http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=08323
There is an unstable release from Mint that I would stay away from until final release happens:
http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=08853
Crunchbang works well with older Toughbooks:
http://crunchbang.org/about/
WATTos works well too:

I've never seen a CF-74, so would like to hear more about what you try and what you like.

Re: OS suggestions?
Do you want to see one? SSD and 4GB is "quick" on my MK4. (J) Same specs as MK3 CF-30.
Sent from new looking CF53-AAGZX1M. One stick of ram on board (they said none)
I be needing a battery cover, WLAN and WWAN cards.
Experimenting with ANTERGOS LINUX. Platter drive. BLINK short USB dongle wireless fired right up.

Re: OS suggestions?
Wow. Droooollllll.... Wish I had one of those CF-53. But way out of my price range. My poor 74 is a CF-74KDMBZAM. Her older sister is a CF-74FCBCZBM no touchscreen. Neither one has a SSD in them YET. Both run 4gb ram.
Have tried Mint deb on some other systems and just didn't FEEL right. Always end up back with plain old Mint Cinn. Recently burned a live disc of WattOS lxde and have the ISO for microwatt. Plan to test drive them soon. Will download MX-14 and live test drive it as well. Also have played with Zorin on the older 74 but just wasn't me. Even tried the gamer version. Might try it again. Have tried Crunch before, was awhile ago tho.
Looks like some ideas to play with here. Thanx.

Re: OS suggestions?
You may like antergos.
Lauches menu from the super key.
My sole gripe with MX-14 is lack of the Super key option for the menu. UmmmI may have tweaked one to use it but need to look it up next month.
BTW if you see Super L it means the left super key. (some call it windows key. (bad word) someone called it the surrender flag.
From Shawn's soon to be parts 53. (710 hours)

Re: OS suggestions?

Nah, It's not the parts unit YET.

Me thinks this overpriced pile of POO I bought a few months ago is the parts unit.

Aggravate me will ya...I'll disassemble you and use you for parts...Sounds like a line from Lost in Space....Or me with my severely broken CF53.

Life will beat you into submission.

Re: OS suggestions?
Har har, surrender key. Must be from a French layout keyboard. Nevermind that I was born in France myself.
As for OS suggestions, I'm the only one here who sticks to the original branch and ignores all variants. Take a look at all the Debian branches in this pic (intentionally not displayed because of huge-ness): http://pics.galacticempire.ca/img/misc/debian-dist.jpg
I have my reasons....
