I'm talking about the OS on the handheld NUVI, use in your car GPS units.

It is a proprietary version of Linux.

What about the other way around?
Use a CF19 or CF30 as a dedicated GPS running Garmin OS?
I would think it's possible, but I am not a software guy.

Ideally a dual boot using grub..
One goes to the standard OS whether that's Win7 or Mint
Two boots to Garmin OS for a dedicated touchscreen GPS..

I can dig out my Garmin and copy what ever else you may need to investigate.

Pretty sure Garmins use an ARM cpu if that matters.

I guess the first step is to get the source code and compile it to a bootable iso???
Load it to a CD or USB stick and see if a CF19 will boot it?

Mind you I have zero idea HOW to do that. ....Nor do I have the peace of mind currently...HELP!

Maybe the "garmin" OS is just the front end of Ubuntu like mate or cinnamon???
Or can the Garmin code be clipped and inserted into Ubuntu??

I vaguely remember somehow you run linux based router software as a virtual machine or something?
Is there an ARM simulator for linux?

Just a taste. Found in Synaptic Package Manager...one of many I know nothing about. I found this by opening Synaptic, left clicking in the list of packages and typing "Arm" no quotes. There is a search box.....this is the way I do it.

QEMU is a fast processor emulator: currently the package supports
ARM emulation. By using dynamic translation it achieves
reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs.

This package provides the full system emulation binaries to emulate
the following arm hardware: aarch64 arm.

In system emulation mode QEMU emulates a full system, including a processor
and various peripherals. It enables easier testing and debugging of system
code. It can also be used to provide virtual hosting of several virtual
machines on a single server.

That's progress..It seems to me that even an ARM simulator is better than a windows program under Wine.

I still would much prefer to run it direct on its own.

That's why a dual boot was on my mind. With one section for GPS only. (Possibly GPS/WWAN.....leaning this way) I''ll try the build on a CF-30MK3 but need the GPS section first as I let Mint do any dual booting. It may not be the way it's "done" but it is the way that I am used to.

This may not play out fast because I want it to work.

In my perfect world one boot would be GPS only. Using Garmin OS on it's own. Because Garmin is GPS only...well some of the newer ones do mp3's and photos. I know they don't do WWAN.


How do you compile source code to make it usable?

How about when running GPS on Gobi card? THAT's why WWAN.
