The touchscreen panel failures over a two year period has tarnished their reputation ,and I am sure they don't want that to pop up again
I don't know where the panels were made , but in my view it was a disaster

It would be very shortsighted of them to sacrifice their reliability to gain short term sales growth

I was with Sony in the 1980's an I saw the direction that Sony took to stay competitive
The way they did that was a shift from Japan to Malaysia in production

Sony had some of the most reliable products and reputation until the late 80's when they outsourced most of thier production
