Western Digital just released this a couple weeks ago... I have dual 300GB raptors in my desktop... this is just juicy!!

Rob, what's your take on these raptors compared to mainstream SATA2 7.2Krpm HDDs and how are they implemented? Raid 0 or 1 and installed onto which m/board?

Months ago, I bought a pair of used/tested-good VelociRaptor 80GB (WD800HLFS - OEM) and it's still on my shelf since I didn't have any m/board that supports SATA. Sure I could use one of those PCI>SATA adapters (VIA chipsets) to run software raid but I heard that throughput is limited by the adapter itself.

As an aside (your opinions appreciated as well), I understand that once an array of disks is created AND data mirrored over, eg. Raid 1 (HDD #1 > HDD #2), HDD #2 cannot be removed from the array or it becomes unreadable/un-accessible/Bios undetectable, even if connected to external USB enclosures. Is this so? If yes, how does one 'make good' the drive again? Thanks!

Ron, it's crazy because AFAIK their was only 36GB, 73GB, 150GB, 300GB and now the new 600GB ones. I personally use 2 x 300GB ones and they are NOT RAIDED as I only had one when I built my desktop and didn't wanna reload everything.

The best scenario would be to have 4 of these drives in a RAID 5 format (You loose 25% of your available space this way). If you didn't wanna spend a $h1t load of money they just go with one drive... they're RIDICULOUSLY FAST!
