CF-31 UEFI version, and what exactly IS UEFI?

Alright I am heading down the rabbit hole, I am going to Hacintosh the CF-3110778CM. I just registered on tonymacx86.com. First stumbling block was we are supposed to put the UEFI version in our profile information. I was able to figure out the rest, but there are no clues in BIOS as to what UEFI version this machine has.

I have some basic questions to ask trying to wrap my head around the whole UEFI thing. It seems that I need this enabled to put OSX onto the laptop. I need to understand it enough to know if this is a reinstall W10 issue, or if I should just put a fresh HDD into the machine. ATM I do not have another caddy for this. If I am going to be swapping drives in and out, I will get one. I am leaning towards a dual boot setup though.

So what exactly (condensed and Toughbook relevant) is this UEFI boot?

I installed W10 on this. UEFI is currently disabled. If I enable it, it goes to the black screen for a second, then reopens the bios interface and doesn't boot. I am pretty sure I had to fiddle with this to get the W10 install to work. So....

Can I fix this W10 install to use UEFI boot? Or do I need to reinstall W10 to deal with this? I am okay with having to access BIOS and change this setting each time I want to boot the other OS. But I suspect it s a drive breaking type of setting...

The Google rabbit hole leads me to believe it is either BIOS or UEFI. Half an hour of digging adds a LOT more questions than it answers. I just know I will not be worried about having more than 2tb of storage on this machine.

MK4 and later has UEFI, MK1-3 does not. It's a different type of BIOS. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_E ... _Interface

Thanks!

I finally stumbled across a Windows article that explained it pretty good. Panasonic just confuses the issue by making the URFI still look like BIOS. Turns out that while things are happier if I go
Into -=cough=- UEFI and set up UEFI Boot, it doesn’t have to be done that way.

Still, dual boot adds in unnecessary complexity for me. And I have a spare drive. So I’m going to pop the other drive in and setup the BIOS, I mean UEFI 😝 accordingly. It takes much less time to swap a drive if they are in caddy’s than select a boot option.

Well not accounting for bios changes…. I’m going to give the install a dry run tonight with the other drive and see how much is broken lol.

A non-UEFI install of Windows 10 can be converted to UEFI:

Salient Points from that web page:
Instructions:

Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
Issue the following command: mbr2gpt.exe /convert /allowfullOS.
Shut down and boot into your BIOS.
Change your settings to UEFI mode.
Alternatively, you may run this command from within the recovery environment:

Boot to the Windows Recovery Environment and start the Command Prompt console:
Press the Windows key and I key simultaneously to open Settings.
Select Update & Security.
Select Recovery.
Select Restart now under Advanced startup.
Select Troubleshoot.
Select Advanced Options.
Select Command Prompt.
It may prompt you to select a user account and type in a password.
Issue convert command: mbr2gpt.exe /convert.
Restart your computer and boot into your UEFI BIOS.
Change BIOS setting from Legacy to UEFI mode.
