CF-19 Mk3 Linux upgrading (Jeff would be proud)

#1 Post by ADOR »

Broke out one of my 19 Mk3's that are my bump around units now. One I loaded with Mint 14 awhile back from my 4gb pen drive I carry as a back up. (It did have pendrivelinux on it, a version of mandriva 2007 so it was a bump up when I re-did it with Mint 14)

Well tonight I thought I might as well update it to a newer version. Signed in, loaded up the update manager. Nope, can't get some packages. Crap. Went to terminal, forgot most commands. Googled for the update commands. It showed they were now 404. Crap again. After some more googling for the correct commands finally got it doing some kind of update. After I get it going I plan to go to a newer version of Mint (I think). I usually just say screw it and down load the live dvd of a newer version and go from there. It has gone easier than I remember in the past so far. I usaully dual boot as well, I have kept this one all Linux so far. Lets see if I am back screaming for help if google fails me or the upgrade goes smooth.

It says I have Mint 15 now, so I guess I still have a ways to go in upgrading this way with out breaking out the disk.

At least it will update and download new software now.

Now where did I write down those commands, lol.

Well screwed up somewhere down the line today. Did lots of updates/upgrade packages. Then at the end rebooted. It pops up to a black screen with a working arrow cursor. Still says "mint 15 olivia" on the terminal shell I could get to come up asking for my user name and password. I put in the user name and password and get incorrect.

Oh well, may be time to reload if I can't get it to work right again. If I have to reload I will just have to decide what flavor. I was just keeping it mint because that is what I already had on it.

I bought a combo 32/64 Bit disk"Linux Mint Cinnamon Desktop version 18" presumably from Mint. My wireless is just way too slow.

This is a nice acting program. Run it live and enter your wireless, then click install from the desktop.

1. It asks if you want to keep the existing system and dual boot. I answer no usually.
2. It says you are going to lose everything...I answer "So What".
3. It gives the install parameters to check, I say go ahead.
4. Install starts...................................and does it's thing. (Oh yeah click the add extras box) DONE Re-boot
5. xinput-calibrate is in the stock Synaptic package manager. Install it.
6. Calibrate the touch screen (In the menu now) and save to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-calibration.conf #CAPITAL X
7. The other thing I add now is VLC. I misspoke above. On first run with a mp4 VLC offers to add a missing program. I click the first one. It just works. (I'm using MP4 on my Panasonic HC-V380 video camera.)
8. Then when I don't need this computer I run upgrades.

That's it. I opened the terminal once with calibrate, once to open nano text editor. Almost fun.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.

I use order my disks when my internet was close to dial up speeds, that or go to the library with my laptop to "study", lol.

My first second OS of Mandriva, then I used pendrive (based on Mandriva) then time 10.10 was around I floated back to Ubuntu. Then when unity desktop came out it was time to swap again. Maybe I will do some "shopping around" to see what I like now.

I still couldn't get it to accept my user name and password. I am 100% sure of the password as I had to type it in many times to upgrade, the user name must of been slightly different than the standard ADOR I use on my laptops.

No big problem, I went searching for what version I wanted to use and wound up narrowing it down to three. Mint 18, Ubuntu 16 and Kali Linux. Kali I found when I first decided I may go back with backtrack linux and found out it was no more but continued on in Kali. The Kali download failed so I will just have to try it later. (It's raining and when that happens my internet get very, very slow in this area, I know some of the phone line boxes go under water so that is most likely it.) Mint and Ubuntu downloaded fine and Ubuntu Mate was the first to go on. I may try a dual boot later on between the too.

I am doing updates and downloading software now. Do a full test of it later.

I figured you might.

I got to decide on leaving well enough alone (HA HA HA HA) OR dual boot or multi boot this one. Then see if my OBD2 software will run on it. If not I still have the other Mk3 and CF-30 Mk2 for that.
