That doesn't mean it works...the panel is probably de-laminated. Ultra common problem through CF=30MK1.
The built-in Serial port should show up as TTYS0.

I missed the part about your USB-Serial cable in your first post. Is it PNP?
Take a look at cutecom (synaptic package manager)
Prolific is built into the kernel.
Linux Kernel 2.4.31 and above already includes built-in drivers for PL-2303 (VID_067B&PID_2303).
NOTE: Google Android OS is also based on Linux kernel so it also includes PL2303 drivers.
