Interesting DVD Problem!
Interesting DVD Problem!
Well when I get a quiet night at work I will sometimes watch a DVD on my CF-30 that dual boots Win7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x64.
Well I am usually on the Linux side of my computer and I have noticed that several store bought DVD's that I tried to play could not be seen or played! Usually the computer would be able to see the title of the DVD, but no fields would be filled on in the DVD Properties and I would never get to a menu. Now this only happened on some DVD's so I thought that that my player was dyeing.
But tonight I had the idea to try it under Win7 and guess what, it read and played every DVD that had failed to play under Ubuntu!
Anyone else had or heard of this problem?

Re: Interesting DVD Problem!
That's interesting...Maybe it has to do with the copy protection.

Linux is a "safer" OS, so it's trying to protect you from that porno movie

I would gather, all of my home burned DVDs play, so very likely.Shawn wrote:That's interesting...Maybe it has to do with the copy protection.
That could be, but I have girlfriend(s) now so, not been watching porn lately.Springfield wrote:Linux is a "safer" OS, so it's trying to protect you from that porno movie

Well I have used VLC Player in the past so I figured that I would try to upgrade from the native "Videos" software. Halfway though the installation it started complaining:Bill_TN wrote:What do you use to watch them? The only player I use is VLC.

Re: Interesting DVD Problem!
Fresh install, eh? The CDROM has to be removed from your sources.list or from files in the sources.list.d directory, and a internet repository has to be added. Let us know if you need help with this, though. There are a few here who use Ubuntu 14 more than I do but I can take a stab at walking you through it if I have to.Azrial wrote:Failed to fetch cdrom://Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS _Trusty Tahr_ - Release i386 (20150218.1)/dists/trusty/Release

Re: Interesting DVD Problem!
Installable from CD/DVD ROM is checked in my software repository, but without the DVD in the drive I fail to see how that could matter. I mean, why would I want to go to the DVD for old versions of files? I must be missing something!kode-niner wrote:Fresh install, eh? This install is over two years old, I have changed nothing. Thanks!

Re: Interesting DVD Problem!
Bill, have you refreshed your repositories lately in Synaptic? There is a setting, to test the different Linux sites to find out the closest to you and the best version. Look at this link and read down to the "download server section".
Run it and then set it for your location after the test. Then try removing, then re-installing the program you'd like to use for watching movies: https://www.linux.com/news/software/app ... eo-players
Cheers
