NAS
NAS
Ok,I would like to have my 4 bay NAS in the shop with me but the router is in the house about 15 feet away.I only need to be able to access the Nas as I will transfer files by USB. Moving router to shop is a no go,any way to wire into the nas to communicate with my desktop with the router in another building?
Networking is not my thing and I have no idea,it is possible to run the Ethernet cable to the shop but I would rather not if possible.

Re: NAS
I have a wireless router. I plugged the NAS into one of the Ethernet ports on the router along with my printer and desktop PC.
I can access all three via wifi..
If you must have it wired,
15 feet is an easy Ethernet run....bury a 1/2 piece of pipe just below the frost line and snake the cable through that.

Life will beat you into submission.
Re: NAS
I guess I'll just run the wire from the camper,no frost here grasshopper. stays above 40 F all year.100 ft of cable is cheap so I can route it overhead.

Re: NAS
Won't work Bill, the Nas has to be plugged into the router and that's in the house. There is no way to access the NAS operating system that I know of except off the router wirelessly to my desktop. But I want the NAS out here and not inside. I could be all wrong but that is my understanding. I also have a new router kicking around here.-

Re: NAS
Actually, if you hook a router TOO the NAS machine, you SHOULD be able to access it thru that router. It ought to become it's own network, independent of internet access. one router wirelessly or wired provides internet access on it's network. The other provides access to the NAS on another network.
I've got one router set up internet and another upstairs that allows access to my home mini server, where I store all my movies. The mini server is wired to the wireless router upstairs. awkward but works for me.

Re: NAS
Turns out that they fibbed me when they said you could not hook directly to the Ethernet port, did that and ran thru the sharing permissions and it works. It is it's own network only accessible thru the desktop with the seagate OS software so everything is groovy.
