Just acquired one of these. http://www.i-techcompany.com/rugged-por ... 0sra2.html
This thing is actually a freaking monster. Like carrying Gran-ma's suit case around. But it has dual displays ect. No hard drive in this one and dvd cover is missing, but it does boot and does boot linux from a thumb drive. Has 6 ram slots, and dual processor sockets. Only one socket is being used right now, and I had to cut the ram down to 2 gb because the others tested bad. Just have to dig a few extra sticks out of the stash and start playing.
Have any of you all played with one these things before?

Looks like a cool piece. What chipset is the one you have and what CPU are you running? It looks like it could be a cool portable gaming system if you can upgrade the graphics.

It it seems to be just as listed in the link. Plan right now is to blow out the whole system, dust ect, then fab a dual hdd carrier and try it on a linux, probably mint for generic stability and W7 for main stream. Dunno about the portable side. No batts at all, she's a plug in the wall machine. Oh I'm sure that eventually it will end up as either parts for an experiment or sold. Just would hate to figure out shipping on this thing.

My "portable" rig isn't fully finished yet, but when the screen is made onto it I call it a portable desktop. My first one was a M-itx HP motherboard that takes socket M. Dropped a core 2 duo 2.0 in it, 4gb of ram, 945 chipset and then put a 6570 ATI card. The next one I shrank down using a M-itx ATI board with a A10-6800k with it's integrated graphics could play Skyrim on high. Then I took a gaems and now working on a custom case to go into and deciding on the next combo to screw together for it, or just get a Alienware Alpha.

64 bit Mint Cinn 17.1 install a success so far. Fixxing to add MC and see how it plays.
Fans are all the time on and a bit loud. High volume air flow for sure. Dual screen takes getting used to. Wonder if it will help keep the creepers from sneaking up behind me? LOL

That is usually impossible once you get started on a project on that game, lol.

On the fans if you can't get there speed down to where you want with software you can put a resistor in the line to slow it down.

If it came down to that I'd prefer a variable res.

You might need to check the BIOS for fan settings or unusually high temps if the fans sound like they're constantly maxed out. Or install fancontrol and lm-sensors to control them with software.

Yea I plan to poke around in the bios more. But was truely just wanting to see if it could even handle an OS of any sort first. It's actually not a bad machine. Handles mint 64 bit like a champ, VLC plays my movies flawless on both screens at same time, MC plays in stereo on heaviest graphics settings with out missing a beat. Been playing it all day long. Actually getting bored with the thing already. The machine not MC.
Guess the next thing will be to do a M/S 7 install and see how 64 bit runs on it. Only 3 gb ramm right now. Too lazy to open it back up and fill all 6 slots with 2gb 5300 ddr2.

Ok so I'm bored with it already. Guess I'll run the numbers, make sure it's not hot, and then post it up on flea bay. If I do a x.xxx dollars obo. Someone ought to buy it.
