Are you reading our minds?

In the hopefully near future we are going to post a list of <700 and >700 linux flavors that play well with our Toughbooks. Vintage and otherwise.

Talking Dog Ranch is having a one day seminar/foodfest in early February. Attendees so far are uncndl1 (Cleve) aka Kris and sadlmkr (Jeff) aka J'd (Jayburd) registered at the Bluerock Ranch California Bed and Breakfast...(if you cook it) aka TDR-HQ Home of the famous talking dogs. Bring a sleeping bag...Kris has dibs on the second bed.

If Kris buys a movie camera there may be filim. ((sic)...my wife's Grandfather's pronunciation)

BTW safn1949 (Kerry) you should come down. Grab some crab in Eureka on the way by. Or red snapper. :D

This a little off topic, I ordered a Fedora 21 DVD to install on this CF-29. I will keep detailed reocrds of the install and other installs I have put on TB's and send it pm to all involved. I normally use Debian based, but need to learn RPM stuff so for this school semster I decided to force Fedora on myself. (note, there is nothing wrong with Fedora, I just have never used it)

Back on topic, I will sit down with my stack of older LXF discs and see which ones boot and which ones dont. I stopped the subscription, I may start it again, its a good way to try out distros. It has some neat ones, some I think go on this thread are Tiny Core, Puppy Linux, DSM Linux.

Tiny Core is like a basic gui Linux system that you add what you want to. From their webpage "TinyCore becomes simply an example of what the Core Project can produce, an 12MB FLTK/FLWM desktop. " (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/welcome.html)

http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/downloads.html

I have to get to class, but its so small someone else may get it downloaded and tested before I have time to. :)

I understand. My thing-to-try is a pure Debian distro. Mint is too easy. :)

Thanks for your input now and in the future.

If you want to try a Debian distribution, you will want to try two of the easier ones that will work on a CF-18, CF-M34, CF-19, CF-52...etc,etc...etc...
Look for the older pc (non pae) version:

WattOS found here:

Glitch, would love to hear more about Fedora. I bought a used book explaining it that came with a DVD, but never got through it...

So after a night of torture for that 29 this is what I have found:

Tiny Core 15 mb opens and runs fine, didnt install it just live
. doesnt have a wifi option, absolute minimal gui OS

Core (live and installation disc) 78 mb opens runs fine
. mutliple choice on desktops / options
. a little trouble with wifi networking (from Tiny Core site)

Fedora 18 Live / install is fine **
. an issue with 18 is no further updates or security patches
. iwp2100 module had to be loaded for wifi (licensing issue keeps it out of distro)

Fedora 19 I have is 64 bit

Fedora 21 install seems to finish even though it shows 3% until it quits (tried it twice)
. upon reboot initial setup has broken pipe and shuts down everything I find no workaround yet.

Kali - latest loads and runs
. no user created during install, didnt try to create used from cmd line.

Bodhi Linux-
. older 32bit still had PAE issues

Debian 32 bit has various sucess
. loads with XFCE desktop but choked on KDE
. which is werid because the Fedora 18 I loaded
. was with KDE. No idea why yet.

So now my smoking 29 is going to get Debian Wheezy installed and left alone for a while.
This CF-19 I am using to write this has Fedora 18 on it. I have no decision on Fedora yet
I will test it further before I decide if I like it or not.

I had this reaction from a distro I was trying. So I threw it on the floor. So how do we load the module? I'll look it up. :)

Heh! I run my downloads wirelessly....if it needs a wire I throw it on the floor. Rather than walk the length of the house I plug in a PCMCIA wireless card. SMC with tiny model number..... :blowaway: Who can read it!

Thanks,

Jeff

Uh, it was several weeks ago I think I just did - - modprobe -r ipw2100 ; modprobe ipw2100
It asked for license info and then carried on. Another Fedora distro recently did the same
thing, except it asked during the install.

If you need the module itself check here:
https://packages.debian.org/search?keyw ... re-ipw2x00

Yeah I know debian/fedora, but it works. o.O

Edit
as root I did this -- lspci | grep PRO or --lspci | grep Intel I dont remember which.
I googled the result (Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG)
and found: https://wiki.debian.org/iwlegacy
After reading it I used the ipw2100 or 2200 module, depends on your card.
