Q4OS Linux on some Toughbooks. This is BETA folks.

#1 Post by SHEEPMAN! »

Cleve and I are playing with this.

Looks very similar to XP Classic...or whatever else you want. Boots from a CDROM. I'm installing right now and downloading updates.

1. Linux/Debian based.
2. 686 PAE so 29 MK4 and above.
3. Libre Office downloading from the main site now.
4. The first thing you want is to be wired and download Network Manager. Comes equipped with wpa_supplicant but it is a hassle.
5. The easiest install out there but has NO LiveCD. You start it and it wipes your drive....some partitioning available but I did not look at it.

This will start the ball....expect updates. I expect no touchscreen issues ....after adding the calibration utility.

From my CF-30MK3 Q4OS.

Jeff, out of the box so to speak, there are two choices: Classic Shell and install with no questions. Install with no questions loads and then re-starts, but the user and password keep you from continuing. Using theClassic shell you chose, you can choose a user name and then a password. I could NOT get it to recognize my wireless LAN as Lubuntu and Mint allow. No joy on that front.

1. To save confusion on the User/Password....use classic shell.
2. Hook it up to the wire.....wireless will frustrate you. Then load Network Manager from the Q4OS site....while you are there load Chrome, lookswitcher, debapps and libre office.

That's it.

Touchscreen to follow.

This Linux distribution and many others found here:
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=q4os
The 52 GUN is installing now with Wired Network Connection as above directions encourage.
Yes, I tried it last night with the wireless network with much frustration

Okay, took 20 minutes to load from the CD. I went here to read up on network manager:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkManager
I ran this code in Linux Console-Konsole (Terminal):
sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome
It ran and ran and ran, the last 2 lines are:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae
loadkeys is missing. Please install the 'kbd' package.

I then ran this:
gun@q4os-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install kbd

And something else loaded
Lot's to learn :salute:

How did you add Libre Office?

Jeff, Although Q40S is polished, surfs the internet quickly it takes a learning curve to do what most take for granted. I probably gave up too soon, but after an hour of trying to find where the download files go, and having trouble with wirless networks, I bagged the install for OPENSUSE GNOME 13.1:
http://www.opensuse.org/en/
It's in the middle of installing, gotta get ready for work, TTYL

What Debian repositories is this using? Libreoffice should be on Debian stable main.

After a few more hours I will say that this is not ready for a raw beginner. The author/s say it is not finished so this is not a criticism.

Recommending an OS is hard but two things on my list are ease of use and lack of frustration.

I will continue to tinker. Part of the problem Cleve is I was not clear in my explanation to you. We'll talk.

Cute though, if you like a XP Classic theme.

Debian it is. Kode, I need to figure out why the freedesktop.org xinput calibrator will not install. I'm thinking I need a better package manager like Mint has. apt-get install not seeing it. :pat:

Like most of this stuff the third time around gets less complicated. :)

Yes, Jeff we should have mentioned in their notes on the web page it is listed as "beta". It did load nicely and I could get on the internet with wired right away. I'm on the GUN with opensuse13.1 and I like it ALOT!
Adding xinput-calibrator was a breeze, ask me how. More later

Yeah a bit of a time waster. Basic install o.k. but definitely beta and missing a lot of packages just to keep it small.

Add to that my lack of experience with K desktop and it's parts.......and Debian for that matter. Spending a lot of time with Google doing huh?
