Hey folks.
I snuck in here from NBR and haven't had much time to mess around with my Toughbooks lately. I'll eventually post about my CF-29 project. I have a MK3 and recently acquired a MK5 that needs its thermal pads changed or re-installed. I'm looking into a media bay battery and eventually a WWAN solution compatible with 1700AWS/UMTS band 4.
I'm a Linux guy, do some occasional netsec and love to tinker.
See you guys around!

Cool.
'lo there Jeff
I don't have many posts there either, but me and Jeff may have had a discussion or two in NBR already since I joined a month ago.

Tell me more about 1700/AWS/UMTS. Power requirements? Do you have a pin-out for the sled yet? Do you have a sled? Do you want one or two? Heh! Back a few days ago my first post was "What's a sled"?
The corner antenna on 29's will work with a Gobi 2000 card though it gives a pop-up about power availability being low. Something like "this device will work better with more juice".
Final question this time...what wave length antenna is necessary?
Sounds like fun.

Re: kode-niner intro
Ah, now we're getting into the meat of the matter. Truth is I have trouble finding a WWAN module that does AWS 1700, so I don't exactly have specs. I found this, though, but at that price point and with all those features, I might as well forget AWS 1700 and switch carriers or use LTE: http://goo.gl/e6YxX1
1700Mhz wavelength is 17.635cm according to my calculator, so that's what I would have to divide from.
What I am doing now works, but is definitely not ideal for outdoor use. I use these two options currently and don't have a sled yet:
Dangling carrier-issued Huawei USB dongle with short pigtail cable and velcro:
Unlocked GT Express 307 card with PCMCIA adapter found on fleabay:
Edit: fixed anti-leaching rule to allow toughbooktalk.com to hotlink my hosted pics.

Re: kode-niner intro
I guess the simple question to ask in this case is, what do T-Mo WCDMA users do?

Glen said a lot here.
When I say it will run, it means I have used /tested (of a sort) the unit. 5725 card picks up 2 to three bars at 15 miles from inside the house. Gobi 2000 the same. I have a sled that has been tested in CF-29(MK4/5), 30 MK1 MK2 using stock antenna.
A wireless ready machine is necessary...look for the antenna on 29/30. Model number contains anything but Z rare G) at 5th position. Others can be retrofitted with a few parts.
Pull down the arrow from above and check old configurator.
My location is not a good place to test( considering the distance to the tower), even though it is line of sight. Carrier is Verizon.

Re: kode-niner intro
My MK3 29HTM50BM has a corner antennae that leads into the PC card bay. However my MK5 is a 29NBLGZBM. Once I get serious into looking for parts I'll post in the CF29 section.
