Well, as I download and install Mint 16 64 bit on this nice CF-30 MK3, just for fun...I looked at this article that is interesting:
https://www.linux.com/news/software/app ... s-for-2014
You'll see some of the old time favorites mentioned, not Mint but that is alright also...Mint is still my favorite but this is a nice review article to read. Interesting note is towards the bottom of the article, whatever "enterprise distro means", it's a brief article that introduces us to what's happening in 2014.
Sadlmkr on the West Coast has made some nice inroads using GPS on the CF-30 & CF-19 product line with Linux Mint. Stay tuned as more and more people shy away from the bloatware of the big giant. :pat:
Try a few and let us know...
Best regards,
Cleve

PostScript...I always like to read and try out new Distros...I just tried Bodhi & Lubuntu on the CF-30 and do NOT like those two suggested as well as Mint. Bodhi did not have an easy network connection like Mint and Ubuntu do. Lubuntu does connect seamlessly with the network, but the Menu is not as nice as Mint....sorry, I hope users of Bodhi and Lubuntu chime in...Best regards :salute:

I recently tried this great operating system on a CF-52 (from Sadlmkr's farm noless) and wanted to share: http://solydxk.com/
It comes in both 32 & 64 bits, as well as XFCE or KDE
From this link: http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/78356.html
SolydXK: New Kid on the Linux Block Delivers Rock-Solid Performance
From the article, "Released in late February by "Schoelje," a key developer of two discontinued desktop options within the Linux Mint distro, SolydXK picks up where the Linux Mint line leaves off. In his introductory posts on the SolydXK site, Schoelje announced that since Linux Mint dropped what were referred to as the unofficial Linux Mint Debian and Xfce editions, he started his own distro based on them."
I like the low impact, made to be as light as possible goal. This distro is secure, stable, and fast.
The (X) is XFCE and the (K) is KDE, hence Solyd X / Solyd K. Home run in my opinion. Enjoy

Thanks for the update? Wiping 17 for SOLYDXK as we speak. We will see what we shall see. Mouse tweak necessary on base system.

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf
In nano text editor:

Code: Select all

 options psmouse resolution=400
Re-boot.
No input on Touch yet as HTM50BM needs repair of TS. This is my first CF-29 and has every right to be broken. Many miles in the Chief's rig. Years. New panel in the works.

Thanks,

Jeff

Did I mention that the super key windows button brings up your menu, and she has favourites too?
Glad you like it. I'm on a 19MK2 live usb and she's quite brisk! TTYl while driving back to NJ Sunday night.

Okay, remember that "X" is XFCE, and "K" is the big brother KDE. If you do try the newest version, there is an update available as of 07/15/2014. I suggest trying X first before moving to K, just saying. Note, here is a link for what to do if you want to update your SolydX / SolydK system;

Disks are in the mail for your edification.
The 52 GUN likes the X 64 bit, she's a purring now!
Cheers

#!Crunchbang, found here: http://crunchbang.org/about/
Downloaded the newest release of Crunchbang 11 Waldorf, 32 bit nonPAE i 486 ISO here: http://crunchbang.org/download/
I chose the download for older machines to try on the CF-28 & CF-18.
Burnt a disk using ImageBurn and then booted "live" on the CF-28. Things were quite brisk, considering. Webpage claims "light, stable, fast" which are appealing for older hardware. I then tried it as a fresh install on a CF-18KDHZAVM.
This CF-18 has the Intel(R), Pentium(R), M Processor 1.2 GHZ, 1024 MB memory, 40 GB hard drive, digitizer.
Waldorf 32 bit loaded up, and will ask you some questions while doing so. You'll need to have internet to do the updates, but not really needed just to try out. After loading and re-booting, the screen will show System Information and ShortCutKeys. The "superkey" (windows) key + space bar will pull up a familiar looking menu. I was on the internet by pusing superkey+w and wow, this little 18 is running nicely! I'm sure there is a way to configure the system "just the way you like it", i.e. have a menu button to hit, etc. The web notes tell us that it uses OpenBox Windows Manager which is lightweight & speedy, and as a result Crunchbang is fast. Although not designed for an older system, scroll down to the bottom and read the testimonials under "Why use Crunchbang". I think this just might be the ticket for those wanting to breath some new life into an older system. My system information shows 2.8 GB / 34 GB disc useage. Works for me!
