I've been a fan of Linux Mint now for around one year as Left Coast Sadlmkr will attest. Mint works well, especially 13 LTS (long term support), as does 14, 15, & 16 on the 19's & 30's. Mint can be found here: http://www.linuxmint.com/
I personally like the MATE & XFCE versions. 32 bit can be used on the MK1's, but the 64 bit will work on MK2's and above. Of course, as you've discovered, the SSD's are coming down in price and are a great match for these little gems. Linux will run many Windows programs, either in Wine and/or in OpenBox. I haven't used these much, and certainly understand why most people have gravitated to Win7 (really, who likes Vista and 8?). I'm putting 64 bit Win7Pro on a MK2 CF-19 right now while typing this on a MK1 CF-30. The 19 is pending sold on CL in northern NJ. This post is for those that like Win 7, but would like to try an Linux OS that can mimic Win 7, Win XP, or Gnome desktop. Here's the Link: http://zorin-os.com/free6.html
Read the fine print (some red) carefully before installing. I have NOT used os7, only os6lts.
Touchscreen works well after downloading from Ubuntu Software Center.
Interesting story, some guys calls me from down South on a CL ad, come to find out he is a Ham Radio Operator and Toughbook Junkie. He told me about Zorin and I tried it.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Please report back here your thoughts on Zorin OS and/or Linux Mint. Two different flavours of Ubuntu, quick & easy, inexpensive and a huge forum to ask questions on when stuck. Best regards, Cleve

Lefty, aka working dog trainer & alternate systems specialist...at least please summarize why you've gravitated to Mint 15 over 13 LTS & Ubuntu 10.04....Please....Cleve

Re: Zorin 6 OS for CF-19 & CF-30's / Win7/Win XP/Gnome deskt
May as well post it here.
You are correct in that I like the option for favorites in the xfce menu.
So I have Mint 15 running xfce desktop and now my new daily user CF-53 running Mint 16. One thing I would like to lose on this is the way the screen falls away if you hit the edges with the mouse. (cursor) Not always.... it's just really eager to open multiple desktops so I hit the edge it falls away, I hit back arrow, desktop expands and hit back again. Ends up with double the left clicks. Just playing here, I find it doesn't happen when doing a PM. Only??? when starting browser....I'll see if anyone else noticed.
What was the question?
With xfce you have a near duplicate of an XPP menu. Mint 15 does not open xfce with [super key]
Mint 16 opens menu w/[super] power off button is right there. Less waving the hands around. For instance calibrate is [super]type cali [enter]
That's why I like 16. I don't like image resize not being in the right click menu. (working on it)
Ah, well...company arrives.
Jeff

Re: Zorin 6 OS for CF-19 & CF-30's / Win7/Win XP/Gnome deskt
Thanks Jeff, I did not know about the super key. I had Mint 16 (64 bit) loaded briefly with the SSD and 4 GB RAM, she was lightening fast. I'll try out your short cuts. Regarding issue you have in a browser, are you using the default Firefox? I have been going to the Software Store on Mint that has almost 42,000 FREE programs to try out. I use Chromium and have not seen your issue. You might try an alternate one such as Chromium, Midori, Opera if you are using default browser.
I keep trying new distros just to see what they are all about...some load right away with no problem, but I don't like the "feel" of the desktop. I keep coming back to Mint also. I've been sticking with the LTS (till 2017) version but maybe that is not necessary. I too like the favorites tab in Mint 15. I'll have to take a look at what Mint 14 does with the menu. I do know that on one trial I loaded MATE with Mint 14, and then used Synaptic Package Manager to load XFCE. It changed the desktop to our favorite "whisker" menu. Meow

Thanks Cleve,
You'll understand when you get carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands. Mouse action and saddle work.
I liked 13 but too many moves.
I have not tried 14.
I Use Mint 15. a good'n. (but not LTS like 13LTS)
Mint 16 ...I use it, easy set up...few things to tweak.
And as you have deduced ...I like the favorites menu.
