REPOST...I DID NOT DO THIS....
Screw e fan, NO FAN!
I got a little excited the other day and decided it would be a good idea to sawzall off my radiator fan. Weird thing is, a week or so later and I think I'm right .
I live right in the city. All my driving is stop and go. Out running errands and such? I've still yet to see the temp gauge hit the 'N' in NORMAL.
It's pretty chilli here now, typically around 50 every day, we'll see what happens this summer, but with how cold these motors run and the carbon build up and what not? How is this really a bad idea? Worst case scenario, motor starts getting hot, crank the heat in the cab.
FWIW - the truck feels MUCH better, esp at low rpms where I always am. I can short shift the shit out of the truck and still have some gut in the next gear. Even if I did install an efan, that wouldn't change. No idea about mpg yet. I'm driving 4 hours north tomorrow - we'll see. Altho this'll also be the first full tank after the truck went up an inch or two and got bigger tires. Regardless, I'll post back.

Re: From another forum.. Sawzall to radiator fan
Seems like there would have been a more eloquent solution out there than a sawzall, but hot rodders have been removing fans for years on older models. More power and quiets some of the engine noise. Most new cars go with an electric fan, but even those are not always needed except in the hotest parts of the summer months. If you're only running 1/4 mile at a time, then the electric fan is just extra weight.
Re: From another forum.. Sawzall to radiator fan
Your pully setup/ratio has a lot to do with that also. I am going with a 16" electric in the 52 Ford.

Re: From another forum.. Sawzall to radiator fan
I have an electric fan from a HHR that I swapped into my Ranger. It works great. I am all for e fans..The sawzall is extreme though. No fan for a daily driver is.... well...dumb. I found it "interesting" to use a sawzall to the spacer rather than spend $1.25 for 4 bolts and eliminate the fan and spacer altogether..
I was also wondering about the lateral stress the sawing action put on the water pump bearing and seal.. The dude did the sawzall stunt on a 4 cyl Ranger. I'm sure 1/4 mile performance was not what he was hunting for...If it was, he had better keep on sawing things off...Like about 1000 lbs worth...

The 2.3's are fine as long as they are the turbo version, Had one in a 86 T bird, it rocked.

Re: From another forum.. Sawzall to radiator fan
I took out the mechanical fan, & replaced it with a elect fan on my '59 Chevy pickup, & it works great with a lot less noise .

What do you have under the hood of that 59? I am running a 89 302(swapped from efi to carb, holley dual plane intake, edelbrock carb and mid length headers) hooked to a FMX.

Original 283 V8 with 2 4bbl edelbrock carbs, & manifold, Mallory dist. Trick Flow alum heads, Hooker headers, ProComp solid lifter cam, Etc, in the near future I plan on building a 383 stroker with a Tremec 5 speed as it runs a little high on the tach with the stock 3:90 gears & the stock non-syncro 3 on the tree.:-)ADOR wrote:What do you have under the hood of that 59? Re: From another forum.. Sawzall to radiator fan
A while back I had a 64 Chevy Fleetside. 3 on the tree. Had it converted to 4 spd...tunnel work and etc. Rear end trans ratio threw the speedo out by 6 mph. Found a guy that built what was effectively a transfer case for the speedo cable. Neat little gears made to order for each vehicle.
1. Take a run over measured mile.
2. Use a cool chart to select the gears.
3. Install gears in the converter and install inline in speedo cable.
4. Test run.
5. Done.
Pretty cool work. Meanwhile he was building model speedboats.
One of the two vehicles I wished I had kept. The other was a 69 Bronco pick-up...3 on the tree 302. That combo didn't need any help power wise. Ummm maybe the 76 Ford FWD SWB Fleetside would have been the third.

Re: From another forum.. Sawzall to radiator fan
Mine still has the factory dana 44 with 3.92 gears. I plan on running it like that for a while. Later upgrades will be a AOD and/or 9" rear end, 3 bar GT 40 heads, roller rockers. May go 351 if I can find one. I was very close to dropping the 390/c6 I had into it.
