Pulling a 12v SATA leg to provide power to a RAPTOR drive?

Hey guys.

The next mod to challenge you all with is to install a WD Raptor drive into a laptop. They are standard 2.5" drives strapped in a heatsink for 3.5" form factor (and I own 2 of them in my desktop to confirm this), so they will physically fit into the laptop + I've read that they don't actually produce that much heat.

The problem is that they REQUIRE the 12V leg from the SATA which laptops do NOT provide. We would have to modify the way that the power supply to the laptop drive runs in order to get 12V to make this drive work.

I can attest to the speed and reliability of these drives as I own 2 of them raided on my desktop to give me 600GB total (RAID 0)! They are WAY more reliable than an SSD and they are FAST AS SHIT! (10,000 RPM)

What do you all think?? I'd like to pop a 300GB one in my CF-C1!!

Have to look at the one I got better. Needed a spare drive a while back and picked up a 36 GB version for like 10 bucks. This just may be doable.

Looks like some have worked on this before.

Also just don't buy up the first one you see to test with. The early Raptors are 3.5" like the one I have. These newers ones are suppose to be better and going to 2.5 " platter from a 3.5" platter would reduce mass and the amount of energy needed to spin that mass.

Ohh I know... The older ones are 3.5"... I woul make sure I buy a new one :)

I already read that first link you gave me too. :clapping:

It's also funny that they are comparing the Raptor to the SSD drive on that NBR link, because I just spent the last 2 days fixing my CF-C1 because the god damn 256GB SSD drive in it died! NEVER AGAIN! Apparently TRIM wasn't working correctly, so tha's why it ran fine for about a year then puked! I'm gonna sell it after Crucial replaces it with a new one!

Thanks!

When I re-do my voodoo hexx I am thinking of trying out a SSD as a compact flash adapter is closest I have got so far, but I am going with a small one 40 to 60 GB only for the OS and then get larger drive in raid for the rest. Right now my sons back up desktop has a 36 GB 10,000 rpm raptor in raid with 7200 rpm 500GB drive.

You'll need a 12V DC-DC converter circuit; looks like about 1/2 amp. Lots of them all over the LED flashlight and solar power boards. The b!tch part is I think they still use a multi-platter drive about 13mm thick. Prolly need a shoehorn about [=====]---------------------------THIS LONG--------------------------<=======] to pry that in there...

I gotz a BFH youzz can use...

:lauging: Brute force- if it doesn't work, you're not using enough.
