Ok, just to clear this up,

It states........
16) The optical drives for CF-29, CF-30 & CF-31 are NOT cross compatible with ANY other fully rugged!

Does that mean they are all the same and fit each other, but no others? or that they in themselves are unique and wont even cross between these three models?

27,28 and 29 are all the same. The 30 and the 31 are different also. You can remove the drive from the cd-rom caddy and put it in any other and it will work.

The 28 and 29 caddies are different! Not sure on the 27, but I would assume that that's different too.

Additionally, the 30 & 31 are the same.
