How will RAM effect speed
How will RAM effect speed
I recently acquired a CF-29 and it has a 512 ram card in it. I ordered a 1 gig ram card. Will this speed things up or are there other things I can do? Running Windows XP Pro.
Oh, I am new here, and I have been looking around. I apologize if this has been addressed some where else.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I mean Win XP Pro, just edited

We get some rules to follow.
That and this, these and those.
CF-20 Mk1, CF-31 Mk5 i7, CF-31 Mk6 i7, FZ-G1 Mk2, CF-54 Mk2, CF-33, FZ-Q2, CF-74J,
Star Labs Star Lite Mk3, Star Labs Labtop Mk3, Raspberry Pi 4b 8gb, Raspberry Pi-400, Raspberry Zero W(running piaware), Raspberry Pi 2

Re: How will RAM effect speed
Assuming this is the 29ETKGZKM: Ram info found @ Crucial http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatibl ... -29etpgzkm
1280 or 1536 max ram. (Is WP Pro a typo?) Touchscreens have 512 on the mobo. Non-touch 256.
So 512 + 1024 = 1536
Everybody has to start somewhere. Welcome.
A SSD and LINUX MX-14 will amaze you. Cabling is a little strange......I use a techtuff converter.
All will become clear. Eventually.

Re: How will RAM effect speed
welcome pp999,
adding more memory should have these effects:
positive:
1) more ram gb = less disk io (more cached files, less swap/hiberfile.sys) = much more responsive system and slightly longer battery life
negative:
2) more ram gb = hibernate/resume take longer (about 5sec for 1gb or 80sec for 16gb) (sata 1 speed for fully rugged models)
mostly irrelevant; highly dependent on individual usage pattern and also likely to be outweighted by 1):
3) more ram modules = more power consumption = slightly shorter battery life
4) more ram modules = more heat = more likely the TB throttles itself to prevent overheating (only during number crunching)

this adapter. I tested one and they work great.

Re: How will RAM effect speed
Hello and Thanks to all. The ram I ordered is the same one as the link you gave, sadlmkr.
It is a touchscreen model and I edited my post to correct it to read Win XP Pro.
Is a SSD drive that much quicker, and do I have to use the adapter shawn linked to? Or is that for a certain type of SSD drive?

Re: How will RAM effect speed
Yes SSD is that much quicker.
That is the only adapter that I can say for sure will work. Cheap ones are quite a gamble. The fail unpredictably too.

I recommend the techtuff product only.

Re: How will RAM effect speed
Thanks again, I will consider the ssd drive after I get the new ram and see how performance changes. Its great to have a place where there is some good people with valuable knowledge. I hope to have some knowledge to contribute someday myself.
I was looking at ssd drives on amazon, a lot of choices. I know I need a 2.5", but I saw sata , I,II,III ? What do you guys recommend I buy? I will probably get a smaller drive 80 gig or so, just confused from there.

sata I is fast enough. You will never see transfer rates above that.
