CF27 caddy in CF28 Possible

#1 Post by ares93 »

if you're reading NBR you might have seen my thread about if the cf-27 caddy fits the cf-28. so short answer no, long answer yes.
the're is already a mod by jtstealthuser that requires cutting the magnesium chassi in the computer however i think i've come up with a new way.
by buying a cf 27 caddy for roughly $20-25 and a 44 pin male female cable($9.99+shippng) you can mod it to fit.
if you look at the two from the top the cf28 had its hard drive mounted vertically and the cf27 horizontally. ergo it wont fit completely and therefore compromising the waterproof chassi.
however by using this cable: http://www.cablesonline.net/644fetomaide.html you can turn the hdd 90 degrees and mount it correctly. i have both the caddy and the cable on the way from the states so i'l post a detailed instruction later if it works, however there is no reason why it shouldn't.

So now instead of a Toughbook he has a Toughlessbook. :D . At one time the 28 caddy was hard to find but now you can get them for around $15.00 shipped . About 5 years ago I paid $80.00 for mine. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... =2&_sop=15

Yea I see that price wise. Just so happens that a caddy , batt and associated cover are items that I am in need of to make mine complete. Mine also has 512 mb ram internal so when I dig out another 512 it'll be 1g with pent 3 so that ones qoing to be a keeper I think.

Just ask around I am sure between all of us we have a TON of parts. I think I still have 6 or 7 complete CF-28 units. Mk2/3.

I would keep that one as well. The one with 512mb ram onboard is VERY hard to find. I though I had found one one ebay, but it wound out not being so. It was still a brand new looking unit though.

Oh god, necroposting deluxe. I looked back here for the first time in years and this is what i found.

Yeah, guys, it worked, briefly, ended up having to cut way more than intended and mount the drive as the CF27 cable intended. It worked, but i ate though three harddrives, in a year.

I've since then upgraded to a CF29, then a CF31 and now abandoned Toughbooks altogether. I now use a ordinary Thinkpad in a Titán case for field ops. My only rugged computer right now is the Hammerhead 3 I'm reviving.
