NOPE! Requires a persistent USB to save. :blowaway:
So on LiveUSB (non persistent) add the i8042 commands in grub before installing. See below. They go in front of quiet and between the quotes.

Code: Select all

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
#   info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Custom Live CD"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.notimeout i8042.nomux quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
Works until re-boot. This method yields a "working" touchpad but the /etc/modprobe.d one makes a better touchpad.

There is a third way I am working on for instant switch to imps in modprobe. Stand by for details some day.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.

I just tried the directions on page 3 of this post using a gifted CF-31JCG802M. The mouse pad cursor would not work until I followed "lefty's" directions on this awesome thread. I booted up my 53J with MX-16 persistent usb and followed the directions in Terminal while on the 53J. Turned off the system and then re-booted the 31J using the persistent usb drive. Mouse touchpad now works! Thank you Shawn & Jeff. I can't wait to get a SSD in this new to me toughbook with almost 600,000 hours!

600k hours what the HECK, how dim is the backlight on that 31?

And I thought almost 9k hours on a 18 Mk4 was high!

EDIT: lol, I bet that was a typo. 600k hours equals to 68 years. 60k hours on a 31 Mk1 could be legit, if it was a early model being used nearly 24/7/365

In bios she reads: 596,230 hours. You'll have to ask the previous owner. She's a MK2 intel i5-2520M with 4 GB ram.
She booted Linux usb, 1307 mb to ram mounted at /live/boot-dev and mounted persistence file rootfs at live/persist-root.
Very, very bright indeed those LED's. Just need a cd/dvd drive, battery, and ssd

i am in the process of trying to straighten out the versa pad problem on my '31 with mint 18.1 installed .
you would think by now that this problem would have been corrected in the install packages .
one of the problems with proposing a fix is the permutations of writing the code and making sure the instructions are simple and complete .
it is much along the lines of the code found for installing various programs that are not listed in the repositories ...
much of it is literally copy-n-paste into a terminal box .

hmmm ...
and now i see that i only have 30 some-odd posts ?

The versapad is a PS/2 type device.

People make the mistake of trying Synaptics drivers on it.

Linux kernel tries to find the right driver but times out before this is complete.

Hence the i8042.notimeout and i8042.nomux. (No multiplex---just work!)

I realize this is a very long thread but it covered my trials and errors when I ran into the versapad on CF-31 MK2.

As per usual I didn't ask anybody ....just did my own research on the gargler. (G00gle).....I did ask Shawn back before he became a Linux aficionado. I think he said Meh!. :D

She's working fine on the CF-31, and I only got to page 3 of the thread. Thanks Jeff for taking the time to post your tribulations.
I might be mistaken, however I think this great thread will help out CF-19 Mk 6 users wanting to try Linux. :salute:

Ah yes.....the trials and tribulations. :)

Toughbooks are not the only devices with Versapads. Check out the "reads" on this topic. 3821 :eek: to date.
