no sound from speaker on CF-19 after Mint install?

#1 Post by thebadger »

Hello all

and greetings from Sunny Oxfordshire.

I am a complete novice but i like using Linux and was recommended to put Mint on my second toughbook.

The sound worked fine on it when it had Windows 'Piss'ta on it, but now with mint 16 the speaker doesn't output?!!?

The headphone jack on the rear works fine, and the feeds through that funny audio program (pulse audio?) are not muted.

other wise it works fine.

anyone got any ideas???/

thanks in advance :help: :damnit:

Time for some terminal talk.

sudo apt-get update #always do this after a fresh install.....words after # are notes and not read by the terminal. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... 1936,d.cGU

sudo alsa force-reload # I have not tried this. See this: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... 1936,d.cGU

I don't like to put stuff out there without testing it. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... 1936,d.cGU
This killed sound. I added the intel line as directed and it came back. Be aware I have been testing this lappy with several headsets (cf-52) so things were pretty clabbered up.
Read it all before testing. :)

tryed them all,no luck!
sound still comes from speaker jack, but no speaker.
i installed beep, and nout happens at speaker.

im stumped now, is there a programme to test the voltage going to the speaker?
i know its unlikely but it could be the hardwear.
any other ideas? :damnit:

Is the speaker plugged in? So that's how you spell nout.

Checking cables and such would be a good idea, with the right screwdrivers.

My check was to plug the speaker into another like unit.

This sounds (rofl) like the sound was muted in Vista when you did the install......ummm I've seen a Linux post aboot sound being disabled by default in Mint....I'll dig for that.

Sound board? Hey Teo, are you reading this. :D

Aye.....that is how you spell Nout. and isn't 'aboot' how Canadians say 'about'?
i think you may be correct. My Ball and Chain (wife) tends to put computers on mute when she uses them.
but cant say i remember it being muted.

ill break the screwdrivers out over the next few days and test the speaker output with a multimeter, just to rule that out the speaker being FUBAR.

but wouldn't it mute the headphone jack as well??

I was really hoping i had made a noob mistake and you lot could give me an attitude adjustment!!!

and to refer back to the top of my post:

Troubleshooting Sound in Linux can be found here:

Scroll down to this section "The Steve Litt Diagnostic Tools"
Note, I have tried as have others when there is no sound in speaker but yes with headphones see here:

Hope you can sort this out as it is very frustrating when it happens, and when you finally get it working, very rewarding!
