Linux@Toughbook CF-19 MK3 - minipciGPS - no function

#1 Post by chris-lej »

First
i want to thank all people dealiung with this problem and trying to give helpfull hints - all opinions are welcomme

problem as follows:

ive got a toughbook cf-19 MK3

its running allright in windows 7 (except the brightness buttons)

so the thing is that i dont use windows since years and wanted to
install the linux operating system on it wich i am used to operate with
very well.
one big problem accures to me

the device has got a integrated after market GPS uBlox-s5-004
it works on windows - but is not even recognized by the linux kernel 3.2
TO ME IT SEAMS LIKE THE SECOND MINIPCI SLOT IS NOT LOEDED PROPERLY IN
LINUX.

normaly i should see the device with lspci
then load the cac module to the kernel then creating a nod in dev
(ttyacm0) then the device should b recognized by the gps device handler
gpsd.

(see attached description of tne chip vendor)

so as i told even if i load the kernelmodul for this gps card manualy it
is not recognized by the system.
so my idea was that they realized the two minipci slots in the device
via seperated controler chips one 4 wwam/wlan card (wich works propper)
and the second one where the gpsboard is installed to. i got some hints
when i had phone conversation with the seller of the toughbok who
mentioned that even under windows there is a special driver to be loaded
to make this pci slot available to the system.

so the big question is : has anyone experence with a similar isue or
more detailed informatrion about the hardware architecture in this
ToughBook
CF-19 MK3
CF19KHRAGAM //9BKYA50685 //AB-9123456789

mostly those isues are easily solved if you know the hardware and load a
specific kernel module.

after 2 weeks of seeking the web i thought it would b an idea to ask the
competence of your
forum

so thats why i actualy want to ask skilled
toughbookusers/owners/sellers/maintainers/ if they had an idea for me to
solve that problem- if i can solve it i will make a very detailed
installation description for the rest of the world and can also suply
with a ready clone image from my working device.

I thank you very much for your kindness and your offer to help me.

best regards

Christian

UPDATE

TO STOP THE RIDDELING I OPNED UP THE DEVICE AND MADE SOME PICS OF THE GPS DEVICE

can anyone tell me to wich part of the bus the smal uBloc gps board s connected - for me it does not look like a pli-attachement more like usb/serial according to the number of lines possible to me. can anyone confirm this or give me some detailed info??

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say your device is a serial device in Linux at ttyS1 if it's wired properly. In Windows it should be found at Com3 and may require a serial to usb driver which I think is built into (packaged with) the Ublox software. (Teo? are you there?)

note: See my PM or email note re: grounding to the chassis to show up in bios.

can anyone tell me to wich part of the bus the smal uBloc gps board s connected - for me it does not look like a pli-attachement more like usb/serial according to the number of lines possible to me. can anyone confirm this or give me some detailed info??
Here's the bios view from a MK4.

Good luck Chris,

Jeff :salute:

Scroll to serial device hit enter for the sub-menu. May be different on MK3.

Jeff! your correct! The second slot mini pcie( WWAN slot to be exact) on CF-19 that Cris mentioned when used with the GPS uBlox-s5-004(mimi pcie) need a driver from USB to serial port. Its differ from normal serial port that Cf-19 allocated for stand alone gps port. Sorry! I am not really good in english thats why I can not explain properly.

Boys Yore Great

- finaly found the gpsdata in ttyS2!

:pat: - i was so fixed on the installation instruction of ublox - that i simply did not get the idea that the dev. is directly connected to the comport ttyS2

so cat /dev/ttyS2 gave me output of data and i could interprete them with gpsmon /dev/ttyS2

Thank you very much for the help !!!

one think less on the list!

LIST:

calibrate touchscreen - done (xinput-calib)
getting gps work - done (automaticly loaded by kernel to ttyS2)
getting mouse propper recognized as touchpad instead of ps/2 mouse - pending
gwtting the 4 keys on the case to work wich do not produce acpi events - pending
adjusting the keyboard map - to get a "|" - pipe symbol (most imprtant for linux condole)

again thanks for the help with this isue - if you ever plan to comme to leipzig - visit me (my hotel is http://www.alt-connewitz.de )

for the rest of the list il open up a ne thread - installing (K)ubuntu 12.04 on a toughbook cf-19 mk3
