Re: It looks like Dell is trying to get in to the rugged lap

I'd agree that that twirly-screen-frame thing looks a bit fragile. But if you need to sacrifice some build quality for more computational grunt, they do offer i7s, 16GB RAM, amd HD5000 graphics, which is a bit better than what Panny has in most of their models.

At least they made it fanless. The angry hornet fan buzz on my G1 is by far its least endearing "feature".

Re: Windows 8 possible?

I'm still running XP on my CF-30Mk1 (need to do something about that I guess), but Windows 8.1 is not bad on my FZ-G1, where its touch-y UI makes more sense. One of the best things I've learned in Windows 8 though is the Windows key + X combination. It brings up a list of power-user shortcuts that l...

Re: Topo software with GPS shuts me down

If you haven't run the unit with GPS on wall power, try that first and see if it shuts down. Not all devices like all inverters.

I suspect the issue is thermal though, as others have suggested.

Re: And so I have played with the Toughpad! :)

I got hold of a FZ-G1 I'm evaluating. Interesting little machine. I've mixed feelings about it right now, somewhat due to the machine and somewhat due to Windows 8. But I'll post a separate thread with pics sometime next week or so.

Re: First time here

I think the locks are more for protection from accidental ejection and spark-producing disconnection of energized parts due to drops or bumps. It's common to have locks, or soldered connections, on other battery-powered haz loc devices I've seen.

Re: And so I have played with the Toughpad! :)

Was it a bump in the Android version (e.g., to 4.2/Jellybean)?

Perhaps since Panasonic's life cycle for these products is far longer than for a smartphone, they'll do a better job of keeping up with Android.

First time here

Hi all, just saying hi. I've used a CF-30 for several years but didn't know about this forum. I'm looking now for a haz loc rated machine, though I wouldn't be surprised if a FZ-G1 adopts me :).

Anyway, this looks like a good community. Looking forward to hanging out.

Kind regards,
Corey

FS: CF-30CTQAZBM

I have what probably is an old CF-30. It still works fine, and now that I've maxed the RAM to 4GB and installed a 160GB SSD it runs XP Pro fine as long as I'm not trying to play Skyrim on it. I would keep it, except that now I'm in need of a hazardous location rated machine, and this one unfortunate...

Re: And so I have played with the Toughpad! :)

The FZ-G1 is probably my next Christmas gift to myself. I have so many uses for something like that. These may be too new to tell, but what is Panasonic's policy toward following the rapid pace of Android development? I have had this problem with cell phones; the phone makers tend to only make one, ...
